“I must admit, I was hoping for a different outcome in Poland’s presidential election. The result is also causing some concern in France,” said German Chancellor Friedrich Merz during a press conference today.
Merz was responding to journalists’ questions on Friday during the annual “summer press conference,” where the federal government’s achievements and upcoming challenges are discussed.
One of the journalists pointed out that both Poland and France will hold elections in 2027.
“There is a risk that politicians skeptical of the EU or openly opposed to it could win. How will this affect the future of Europe?” the journalist asked Merz.
“Yes, this is indeed one of the greatest challenges facing the EU when it comes to its unity. I must admit, I was hoping for a different outcome in Poland’s presidential election. This result is also raising some concern in France,” the Chancellor responded.
When asked about the situation at the Polish-German border, the Chancellor emphasized the “close cooperation” between Warsaw and Berlin on this issue. He noted that he is “glad Poland is carrying out border checks.” The CDU politician added that “there is broad agreement on the need to preserve the Schengen Area.” He also assured that the controls introduced by Germany are temporary.
