A wave of fear has swept over the German hotel industry operating in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The reason is the planned opening later this year of the five-star Gołębiewski Hotel in Pobierowo, which will be able to accommodate up to 3,000 guests, including visitors from Germany. “Everyone else will lose out,” warned in an interview with the Ostsee Zeitung Rolf Seelige-Steinhoff, director of the German hotel chain.
Poland challenges Germany in the tourism sector
The five-star Gołębiewski Hotel in Pobierowo is expected to welcome its first guests later this year. According to information from money.pl, the owner is waiting for just one final document: the environmental decision currently being prepared by the Rewal municipality in the West Pomeranian Voivodeship.
Ultimately, the hotel will offer 1,200 rooms. It will be able to host 2,200 guests, and with additional beds – up to 3,000 people. This massive investment is attracting attention not only in Poland but also in Germany. German hoteliers fear that “the biggest player in the industry” in the region will ruin their businesses and become a competitor to seaside resorts on the western side of the Baltic.
“This project will destroy the tourism industry as we know it. If everything goes according to plan, the hotel will generate two million overnight stays a year. Everyone else will lose out,” warned in an interview with the Ostsee Zeitung Rolf Seelige-Steinhoff, managing director of the German Seetel Hotel Group.
The German tourism industry is concerned not only about losing customers to the Polish hotel, but also employees.
