German media intensify criticism of Polish President, accusing him of “sowing chaos”

“The aim of Nawrocki appears to be to sow chaos ahead of next year’s parliamentary elections. Despite nearly 4% economic growth, investors must interpret this as a warning signal,” writes the major German daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. This is yet another article by the paper criticizing President Nawrocki after he vetoed the law implementing the EU’s SAFE mechanism.

President Karol Nawrocki vetoed legislation concerning the EU SAFE loan. The entire government camp reacted to the presidential veto. Donald Tusk convened an extraordinary meeting of the Council of Ministers, during which the government effectively adopted a resolution on SAFE. The Minister of Finance, Andrzej Domański, and the Minister of National Defence, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, have been tasked with signing the relevant agreements.

The president’s camp, as well as the opposition, warns that implementing the SAFE program through a Council of Ministers resolution is not in line with the law. There are many indications that Donald Tusk’s cabinet does not intend to stop. In fact, a few days ago, Infrastructure Minister Dariusz Klimczak announced that he even has a “Plan C” regarding SAFE.

Nevertheless, since President Nawrocki announced his decision on SAFE, a storm has erupted in the media, including foreign outlets.

German media attack Karol Nawrocki, accuse him of “sowing chaos”

The main argument recurring throughout the article is: “by blocking the SAFE program, President Karol Nawrocki is harming Polish interests.” The newspaper claims that the president’s goal is to “sow chaos ahead of the parliamentary elections in 2027.” But that is not all.

“A year before the elections, the struggle for power in Poland is taking on grotesque characteristics. The President of the National Bank of Poland is allying with President Karol Nawrocki, who is fighting the government,”

one can read in a commentary by German journalist Andreas Mihm.

Further on, FAZ writes: “(this case) leads to an escalation of tensions in domestic politics in a country that is the most important trading partner and investment location in Eastern Europe, and it also undermines the ties linking Poland with the EU and is rooted in hostility toward Germany.”

Moreover, according to the German commentator, the largest opposition party, PiS, together with President Nawrocki, “is seeking to overthrow the government, to prevent even more radical populists on the right from gaining strength.” “The stance of PiS cannot be justified, as it harms Poland’s interests, its economy, and the country’s prosperity,” the article concludes.
