German Politician Threatens to Punish Poland over the Election of Karol Nawrocki

Germany appears to be descending into an anti-Polish frenzy following the election victory of Karol Nawrocki. Media outlets and politicians from across the Oder—many of whom actively support Donald Tusk’s government and its efforts to marginalize the patriotic opposition—have intensified their attacks on the Polish right to an unprecedented degree. High-ranking German politicians have even gone so far as to call for punitive measures against Poland over what they perceive as a “scandalous” choice.

Moritz Körner, a German Member of the European Parliament and Secretary General of the liberal-left FDP party, announced on social media his intention to see Poland punished for the outcome of the presidential election.

“The trust Poland earned following the parliamentary elections [in October 2023] is already over,” Körner declared brazenly. He added, in a similarly confrontational tone: “The Polish government must now pass all necessary legislation to restore the rule of law. If the newly elected president blocks the required reforms with his veto, the European Union will have to freeze funds for Poland once again. Ursula von der Leyen must make it clear that if Poles want to continue the policies of the previous [PiS-led] government, they will face continued sanctions. Responsibility will lie with the new president.”

It remains unclear whether this unprecedented political blackmail was coordinated with Donald Tusk. Could this be the “alternative method of governance” mentioned by the Prime Minister two days ago—should the president oppose solutions pushed by the December 13 coalition that are seen as harmful to Poland? These questions remain unanswered for now. However, the timing of Tusk’s address and Körner’s controversial remarks is certainly notable.

Körner’s statement was met with swift reaction online. Zygfryd Czaban responded bluntly: “No one here fears you anymore. Your threats will only strengthen our resolve. You will pay us war reparations—whether you like it or not.”
