The German press summed up the visit of Vice Chancellor and Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil to Warsaw. The Frankfurt daily focused mainly on Poland’s debt, but also on the weakness of the Polish government. At the same time, it acknowledged the success of Karol Nawrocki, which was his invitation by Donald Trump to the G20.
“Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung” wrote in its report on the visit that Poland has a strong economy and a weak government. Lars Klingbeil, who comes from the Social Democratic Party (SPD), which is part of the governing coalition in Germany, is both finance minister and deputy to Friedrich Merz. He came to Warsaw to meet his government counterpart, Andrzej Domański. German media assessed that Klingbeil was to gather inspiration to improve his country’s situation. “While prosperity in Germany is stagnating, the economy on the eastern side of the border is developing dynamically”, the “FAZ” journalist stressed. “Poland’s economic growth could be a stimulus for Germany”, it was further noted.
“Strong Economy and Weak Government”
However, the conclusions are not entirely positive. Poland is currently at a level that does not allow it to adopt the EU currency, the euro, in line with the Maastricht criteria. The reason is an excessively high deficit.
“FAZ” also drew attention to Poland’s invitation by Donald Trump to the meeting of the Group of Twenty. However, the announced participation in the G20 summit was seen not as a success of the government, but of President Karol Nawrocki. It was emphasized that although he does not belong to the Law and Justice party (PiS), like his predecessor Andrzej Duda he is on a “hard line opposed to Donald Tusk’s pro-European government”.
