GKS Katowice claims eighth Polish ice hockey championship title

On Thursday, GKS Katowice claimed the Polish Ice Hockey Championship. In the last final match, the Katowice side defeated GKS Tychy 5-2, thus winning all matches in the final series and claiming the gold medal.

GKS Katowice and GKS Tychy both finished the regular season in fourth and third place respectively, but their outstanding performance in the play-offs meant that they were competing for the top title in the finals.

The team from Katowice was clearly the superior side in the league finals, winning all four matches. In the final minutes of the match, Grzegorz Pasiut scored a goal to crown GKS’ victory of 5-2 and the title of eighth league champion.

The play-offs were more even, and it took a decisive seventh match to overcome Cracovia and JKH Jastrzębie. Tauron Unia Oświęcim won the bronze medal, defeating Cracovia 2-0, and the team at the bottom of the league was Podhale Nowy Targ.
