In a controversial incident at the Sejm, Grzegorz Braun, a senior member of the far-right Confederation party, utilized a fire extinguisher to extinguish candles on a Hanukkah menorah.

The celebration of Hanukkah, which marks the recovery of Jerusalem in 164 BC, took place at the Sejm on Thursday. Braun, known for past anti-Semitic remarks, approached the menorah with a pre-released fire extinguisher, spraying the candles and the entire Sejm hall with extinguisher powder.

Following the incident, the Sejm’s Presidium took disciplinary action on Tuesday. Braun faced penalties, including a half-cut in his remuneration for three months and the suspension of his entire subsistence allowance for six months. Moreover, the Presidium granted authorization to the Sejm’s Office to submit a motion to the prosecutor’s office.
