Prosecutor Jan Drelewski was the author of the bill of indictment against Sławomir Nowak, a former minister in Donald Tusk’s government. And the harassment began. As established by the Niezalezna.pl portal, the Disciplinary Spokesperson at the Prosecutor General’s Office has initiated explanatory proceedings. Meanwhile, today an attempt was made to serve a decision—issued by Waldemar Żurek—recalling Drelewski from his secondment to the Mazovian Local Branch of the National Prosecutor’s Office. This despite the fact that Prosecutor Drelewski is currently on medical leave.
Sławomir Nowak served as a minister in Donald Tusk’s government and as the head of his political cabinet. In 2021, he was charged with numerous corruption offenses, and the indictment was prepared by the experienced prosecutor Jan Drelewski. However, after the change of government, he was removed from the case.
The so-called “Polish thread” concerned allegations including suspected acceptance of financial benefits in exchange for influencing appointments and decisions in state-owned companies. This aspect was separated into distinct proceedings from the main trial, which is ongoing before the Regional Court in Warsaw.
Unexpectedly, the “Polish thread” was discontinued at a preliminary hearing by assessor Arkadiusz Domasat, and the Regional Court in Warsaw recently upheld the discontinuation, in a ruling issued by Judge Anna Szymacha-Zwolińska.
Immediately after the decision was announced, just outside the courtroom, Prosecutor Michał Mistygacz—the head of the Warsaw Regional Prosecutor’s Office—publicly criticized the conduct of the investigation.
“The original sin was committed at the beginning of the proceedings,” he said. He pointed, among other things, to “including everyone in a single set of proceedings” and to the “failure to verify the testimony of Mr. Jacek P.,” adding: “It was a mistake by Prosecutor Jan Drelewski.” At the time, there was already speculation that this signaled impending reprisals against the author of the indictment.
Unofficial information about decisions being made had been reaching journalists at Niezalezna.pl for several days.
One of these has now been confirmed. The Disciplinary Spokesperson at the Prosecutor General’s Office has undertaken explanatory actions concerning Prosecutor Jan Drelewski. This was confirmed to us by Prosecutor Anna Adamiak, spokesperson for the Prosecutor General. However, she did not provide details about the matter or the scope of the disciplinary spokesperson’s actions. Undoubtedly, this may be a prelude to formal disciplinary proceedings.
Simultaneously—as established by our findings—a decision has been made to recall Prosecutor Drelewski from his secondment to the Mazovian Local Branch of the Department for Organized Crime and Corruption. The decision was taken by Minister Waldemar Żurek.
Today, events took an unusual turn. Because Drelewski is ill and on medical leave, a prosecutor’s office employee was sent to him in order to serve the document recalling him from his post.
