Pro-government media – ever since the meeting at Adam Bielan’s house – have continued their attacks on the Speaker of the Sejm, Szymon Hołownia. It seems that TVP in liquidation, has outdone other outlets in this regard. During a recent broadcast, host Justyna Dobrosz-Oracz went so far as to speculate about the “death” of the Poland 2050 leader – simply because he greeted members of the opposition.
In early July, a meeting took place at the home of Adam Bielan, one of the most influential MEPs from Law and Justice (PiS), gathering politicians from across the political spectrum. Attendees included PiS leader Jarosław Kaczyński, Senate Deputy Speaker Michał Kamiński, and Sejm Speaker Szymon Hołownia. News of the dinner leaked – according to Bielan, by individuals overseeing the Government Protection Bureau (SOP) – to media outlets sympathetic to Civic Platform. Since then, Hołownia has become the target of attacks from certain editorial offices and members of the ruling coalition.
The politicians present have repeatedly stated that the meeting was not part of any “conspiracy,” as some critics claimed, but rather a conversation about important national matters. They emphasized that in a normal country, a meeting between high-ranking officials – including the Speaker of the Sejm and the leader of the largest opposition party – wouldn’t provoke such an extreme reaction. Despite this, the criticism against Hołownia has continued. On Thursday, TVP in liquidation found yet another reason to take a jab at the second-highest-ranking official in the state.
Criticism for… Saying Hello
“The Speaker took a beating – you could see it online too – a lot of people were outraged by that secret meeting. But the Speaker of the Sejm hasn’t even tried to hide his interactions. Lately, he’s been seen chatting in the Sejm with politicians from Law and Justice, which our cameraman caught on tape. Look here – that’s a former deputy agriculture minister. And next, you’ll see MP Gosek, and Mr. Bogucki, who might become the head of the President’s Chancellery,” said Justyna Dobrosz-Oracz while broadcasting the footage.
What did the video actually show? Simply that the Speaker, on his way to the Sejm, greeted some politicians heading in the same direction. But for the TVP journalist, this seemed to cross a line, prompting her to declare:
“Anyway, he’s clearly not hiding the fact that his strategy is to ‘talk to everyone.’ No one’s stopping him. We should all be talking to one another. But could this confidence that it’s a good strategy end up being fatal for Szymon Hołownia?”
None of the studio guests challenged her statement. In fact, Jacek Nizinkiewicz from Rzeczpospolita partially agreed with her.
