How to Keep Holiday Feasts Healthy and Light

Holiday meal tips for healthier feasting: lighter recipes, lean meats, spices, and smarter cooking to balance tradition with wellness.

The average Pole consumes up to 6,000 calories during a festive day, with some reaching 10,000 calories, according to Professor Danuta Figurska-Ciura from the University of Life Sciences in Wrocław. This starkly contrasts with the recommended daily intake of 2,000 calories for a healthy adult weighing 60-70 kg.

Smart Planning and Cooking Tips
To reduce waste and overeating, Professor Figurska-Ciura advises preparing half the originally planned portions. Lighter cooking methods like steaming, poaching, or baking can replace frying. When frying is essential, use clarified butter or plant oils and allow dishes to drain on paper towels to reduce grease.

Lighten Traditional Recipes
She suggests modifying recipes by using lean meats like turkey or veal and reducing fatty ingredients in dishes like bigos. Adding antioxidant-rich garnishes like cranberries and serving with fresh salads improves nutritional value.

Add More Fruits, Veggies, and Spice
Spices like thyme, garlic, and ginger, along with forgotten vegetables like parsnip, support digestion. For drinks, skip sugary sodas and opt for fiber-rich dried fruit compote.
