Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz was eliminated in the second round of the Tokyo ATP 500 after losing 4-6, 4-6 to British player Jack Draper. This marks Hurkacz’s first tournament since the US Open, where he played without his usual coach, Craig Boynton. Despite strong serving from both players, Draper outclassed Hurkacz with one decisive break in each set.
Draper’s Dominance
Jack Draper, fresh off his first professional title in Stuttgart and a semifinal run at the US Open, showcased impressive consistency against Hurkacz. His powerful serving and superior court play placed Hurkacz under constant pressure, leading to the Pole’s early exit from the tournament. Hurkacz managed only three break point opportunities but failed to convert any.
Both players hit 11 aces, but Hurkacz committed five double faults while Draper had none. Hurkacz tallied 28 winners, but his 30 unforced errors proved costly. Despite the loss, Hurkacz still leads their head-to-head 4-2, with wins in their earlier 2023 matchups on clay in Monte Carlo and Madrid. Draper, however, proved too strong this time.
