A Lifetime Dedicated to Sports Journalism

Maciej Petruczenko, an iconic sports journalist and long-time contributor to Przegląd Sportowy, passed away on January 27, 2025, at the age of 78. Born on October 27, 1946, in Międzyrzec Podlaski, Petruczenko devoted over five decades to chronicling sports history, primarily focusing on athletics and the Olympic movement. A graduate of the University of Warsaw’s Law Faculty and a postgraduate in journalism, he joined Przegląd Sportowy in 1970 and remained its cornerstone until his final days. He held numerous roles, including Honorary Editor-in-Chief, a title bestowed upon him in 2021.

Beyond his articles, Petruczenko authored several books, including his most cherished work on Irena Szewińska, “Outrunning Time: The Career of Irena Szewińska Behind the Scenes.” His expertise on doping in sports and his commitment to fair play were widely recognized, earning him prestigious awards such as the Grand Press Bohdan Tomaszewski Award and the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta.

A Legacy That Transcends Generations

Petruczenko’s contributions extended beyond journalism. He collaborated with the Polish Athletics Association, led press offices for major events, and was deeply involved in initiatives like the “Złote Kolce” ranking. Honored as a 50-year veteran of athletics coverage, he remained active until his passing, attending events like the Masters of Sport Gala just weeks before his death.
