Iga Świątek Overcomes Early Nerves to Advance in Olympic Tennis Tournament

World No. 1 Iga Świątek defeated Irina-Camelia Begu 6-2, 7-5, advancing to the second round of the Olympic tennis tournament on the renowned clay courts of Roland Garros.

Świątek, who has repeatedly highlighted the importance of the Olympics to her career, felt the anticipated pressure in her opening match. This was apparent in the early moments of the first set. Despite a strong start, leading 2-0, Świątek’s focus slipped, allowing Begu to equalize. However, at 2-2 and down 0-30, Świątek regained her momentum, dominating the remainder of the set without dropping another game.

The second set was more challenging for Świątek. Despite balanced play, she made simple errors, allowing Begu to break at 3-3 and take the lead. However, trailing 3-5, Świątek’s mental toughness shone through as she won four consecutive games, showcasing her best moments in the match.

She will next face the winner of the match between Nadia Podoroska and Diane Parry.
