Iwona Januszyk’s Nightmare. Polish Athlete Suffers Olympic Drama: “I Am Devastated”

Iwona Januszyk experienced a crushing blow during the Olympic Games, and she could not hold back her tears after the race. The Polish athlete was eliminated in the qualification round of the ski mountaineering sprint, but her result was not determined by her form – it was caused by disastrously prepared equipment. “All my work over the past years was ruined by a single wax,” she said, devastated after the race.

Iwona Januszyk went through one of the most difficult moments of her sporting career. The Pole, making her debut at the Winter Olympic Games, was eliminated in the qualification round of the ski mountaineering sprint with a time of 3:34.88 – the slowest in her heat. Italy’s Giulia Murada (3:17.63) was the fastest in the heat, while the best overall qualification time was recorded by France’s Emily Harrop – 3:03.34.

Pole Eliminated in Qualifications

Although Januszyk was well prepared and ready to fight for advancement, her start was effectively ruined within the first seconds. The athlete did not hide her despair and, speaking to Eurosport, described the drama that unfolded on the course.

“What happened? The servicing. Right after the start I had about 200 grams of snow stuck under my ski, and the other side wasn’t gliding at all. You can ask cross-country skiers what it’s like to race with something like that. I tried until the very end, but all my work over the past years was ruined by a single wax. I am devastated. I simply don’t know what’s next. Because I couldn’t do anything,” she said with tears in her eyes.

In ski mountaineering – a discipline combining uphill skiing, sections climbed on foot with skis carried in a backpack, and fast descents – every equipment detail is crucial. This time, it was precisely the equipment that took away the Pole’s chance to compete with the best.

The top three athletes from each heat, along with the next three fastest overall times, advanced to the final. Januszyk had no opportunity to join the fight for those places. Instead of becoming a triumphant sporting story, her Olympic debut turned into a painful lesson and a drama that will not be easy to forget.
