On Tuesday, a meeting took place at the headquarters of the National Security Bureau (BBN) between Prof. Sławomir Cenckiewicz and the American analyst and expert in international security, Andrew Michta. According to a statement published by the National Security Bureau on X, the meeting was held at the invitation of Minister Cenckiewicz.

“At the invitation of Minister Cenckiewicz, today’s guest of the National Security Bureau was Prof. Andrew Michta, an analyst, expert on international security, and academic lecturer, who delivered a lecture and discussed matters with the BBN’s leadership and experts,” the Bureau reported.

The discussion centered on the new U.S. National Security Strategy, particularly in the context of the future of Polish-American cooperation, strengthening relations with the U.S. administration, and regional and transatlantic cooperation based on shared interests and a common assessment of threats. Participants also addressed the evaluation of NATO’s defense capabilities, Poland’s role as a security hub on NATO’s eastern flank, and the battlefield situation resulting from Russia’s war against Ukraine, including prospects for ending the conflict and post-war scenarios.

Presidential ministers Adam Andruszkiewicz and Karol Rabenda also took part in the meeting.

The new U.S. National Security Strategy, published on Friday, outlines the priorities of America’s foreign and security policy. It emphasizes the need to “restore stability in Europe and strategic stability in relations with Russia,” the expectation that European states assume primary responsibility for their own defense, prevention of “any hostile power” from achieving dominance, an “improvement” of Europe’s current political course, and “an end to perceiving NATO as a continuously expanding alliance.”

The New U.S. Strategy

On the same day, the National Security Bureau published a concise analytical brief prepared by its experts on the new Strategy. The brief states that the American document signals “a fundamental overhaul of the United States’ approach to the world.” According to the BBN, the U.S. has redefined its national interest, shifting “the emphasis from global engagement to the protection of sovereignty, the rebuilding of internal strength, and a focus on great-power competition—primarily with China.”

According to the Bureau’s analysts, the Strategy carries far-reaching consequences for Europe and for Poland. As they conclude, the document increases the strategic relevance of the part of Europe in which Poland is located, “opening new opportunities for Poland but also requiring greater independent defense capability.”
