“Poland’s 1791 Constitution, the first modern constitution in Europe, stands as a testament to your nation’s enduring commitment to democracy, freedom, and national sovereignty. Polish defenders of freedom have been part of America’s history since its earliest days, and we continue to share a common commitment to liberty and prosperity. The United States highly values our partnership with Poland, which includes strong and growing cooperation in defense, trade, and energy security,” wrote U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio today on the occasion of the 235th anniversary of the adoption of the May 3 Constitution.
This year marks the 235th anniversary of the adoption of the May 3 Constitution—the first such legal act in Europe and the second in the world to regulate the system of government as well as the rights and duties of citizens. It created conditions for the country’s further political and economic development.
On this occasion, Poland and the Polish people have received numerous congratulations and well-wishes from neighbors and allies.
To mark the anniversary, the head of American diplomacy, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, issued a special statement.
“On behalf of the United States of America, I extend congratulations to the Polish nation on the occasion of Constitution Day. Poland’s 1791 Constitution, the first modern constitution in Europe, stands as a testament to your nation’s enduring commitment to democracy, freedom, and national sovereignty.
