“European Moderation” – the latest commentary by Tomasz Sakiewicz
After 16 years, Hungary is set to see a change in the prime minister’s office. Viktor Orban will be replaced by Peter Magyar, the leader of TISZA. Why has Hungarian society made such a choice? This issue is examined in detail by Tomasz Sakiewicz in his latest commentary titled “European Moderation.”
“Regardless of fluctuations in voters’ moods, Western civilization is characterized by an aversion to radicalism. Radicalism is not particularly well defined, so this defense mechanism has an especially interesting dimension: no one gains full power, and certainly not for long. The more someone is suspected of deviating from normality, the faster they lose power,” we read.
The journalist notes that “the liberal left in Hungary and Poland went too far, so they were sidelined for a long time. In Poland, they are once again going too far, and the end will again be painful. But the break was necessary so that the right would not become completely distorted while in power. Meanwhile, the liberal left in Europe has been governing for a long time, is becoming increasingly extreme, and the change will be noticeable – and it will come soon.”
