In Rome, unknown perpetrators defaced with paint the monument of St. John Paul II, located near the city’s main railway station, Termini. An offensive inscription and a drawing of the hammer and sickle were left on the statue. On Saturday, Ansa reported that the Carabinieri began cleaning the monument.
The Italian agency noted that the inscriptions on the monument were discovered by the Carabinieri at the end of a rally organized there as a sign of solidarity with Gaza and its people.
The case was commented on by Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani.
“There are no words to condemn the desecration of the monument of Saint John Paul II at Rome’s Termini station by left-wing extremists during the strike and demonstrations of recent days. Enough of hatred! Enough of bad teachers!” – he wrote on X.
The monument was unveiled in 2011.
