Kaczyński recalled Tusk’s statement on Mercosur: “The government deceives us at every step”

“Let us support the farmers’ protest, as they are fighting for a safe future for Polish agriculture, as well as for the health of our families!” wrote the leader of Law and Justice (PiS), Jarosław Kaczyński, on social media.

At 11:00 a.m., a large protest by Polish farmers opposing the signing of an agreement between the European Union and the Mercosur countries began at Defilad Square in Warsaw.

Earlier, at the Presidential Palace, the President of the Republic of Poland, Karol Nawrocki, met with representatives of farmers’ organizations.

The protest concerns opposition to the agreement between the European Union and the Mercosur countries, on which the final decision – a vote by the ambassadors of the member states – is to be taken in Brussels on Friday.

When the farmers set off from Defilad Square, they will march along Jerusalem Avenue, through de Gaulle Roundabout, Nowy Świat Street and Three Crosses Square to Wiejska Street – in front of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland. They will then proceed along Piękna Street and Ujazdów Avenue to the Chancellery of the Prime Minister. The gathering there may last until 3:00 p.m.

Opposition politicians are expressing solidarity with the protesting farmers. Jarosław Kaczyński, leader of Law and Justice (PiS), wrote on the X platform: “clearly contradictory messages are coming from the government. Minister Krajewski claims that at the last moment he still wants to negotiate something, while Tusk was already assuring in December that the UE – Mercosur agreement is safe for farmers and consumers.”

“The truth is that the government deceives us at every step. Today it is trying to sugarcoat an issue for which it bears full responsibility, and which is extremely harmful,” he added.

The leader of the largest opposition party appealed: “let us support the farmers’ protest, as they are fighting for a safe future for Polish agriculture, as well as for the health of our families!”

The post was accompanied by a statement by Prime Minister Donald Tusk from December 18, 2025. He said at the time: “if the version of Mercosur that we currently have on the table comes into force, it is largely safe from the point of view of Polish farmers.”

Morawiecki: “Farmers are taking to the streets for all of us”

The farmers’ protest was also addressed by Law and Justice (PiS) MP Mateusz Morawiecki. In a recording published on the X platform, he emphasized that “farmers are not taking to the streets only for themselves – they are taking to the streets for all of us. Because what is happening poses a threat to the Polish agricultural sector, to the Polish countryside and to food security. The agreement between the European Union (UE) and Mercosur opens Polish agriculture to products from South American countries, where completely different standards are applied – standards that do not apply to Polish farmers, for example in the area of pesticides. The Polish government is unable to stand up for Polish farmers and claims that the agreement is not harmful to them,” he said.

He stressed that consent to signing the agreement with the Mercosur countries “is a betrayal of Polish farmers and an acceptance of flooding Poland with cheap, low-quality food from South American countries.”

“Let us support Polish farmers. This is our common cause,” he concluded.
