Prosecutor General Waldemar Żurek announced that the proceedings concerning subsidies from the KPO, initiated on Friday by the Regional Prosecutor’s Office in Warsaw, will be referred to the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) on Monday.
On Friday, the Regional Prosecutor’s Office in Warsaw initiated ex officio verification activities in connection with media reports regarding irregularities in granting subsidies from the National Recovery Plan (KPO). The matter concerns doubts over subsidies for companies in the HoReCa sector (hotel trade industry, gastronomy, tourism, and culture), which were allocated, for example, for corporate yachts, saunas, tanning beds, furniture replacement, or the purchase of a virtual shooting range.
On Monday, Minister of Justice Waldemar Żurek pointed out that the Polish prosecution is obliged to refer this case to European prosecutors.
“This is an independent institution, with a prosecutor appointed for a 7-year term by key EU institutions,”
he stressed.
“I have already spoken with them, so today this case will be handed over, and it will be conducted by independent prosecutors,”
the Prosecutor General stated.
On Sunday, the news portal money.pl reported that, in correspondence with the editorial office, the European Public Prosecutor’s Office said:
“The EPPO is responsible for conducting investigations into potential financial abuses related to EU funds, so this matter is certainly of interest to us, and we remain in close contact with national authorities.”
