Lithuania strengthens security for the LitPol Link amid regional tensions and prepares for disconnection from Russia’s energy system.
Lithuania’s Public Security Service (VST) has taken over the protection of the LitPol Link energy bridge in Alytus, replacing a private firm previously responsible for security. The heightened measures coincide with the planned disconnection from the Russian BRELL energy system in February.
Advanced Protection Systems
Due to regional security concerns, including incidents involving communication and power cables in the Baltic Sea, Lithuania’s Interior Minister Wladyslaw Kondratowicz emphasized the need for heightened safeguards. The VST remains discreet about the number of personnel involved but highlighted the deployment of advanced anti-drone systems and specialized weaponry for extreme scenarios. Additionally, the Operational Response and Counterattack Team stands ready to manage high-risk situations.
Preparedness for Threats
Lithuania’s detachment from the Russian energy network and synchronization with continental European systems is scheduled for February 8. Authorities anticipate potential acts of sabotage aimed at undermining the transition. Energy Minister Żygimantas Vaičiūnas confirmed, “We are prepared for any threats.”
Energy Cooperation Agreement
Efforts are underway to formalize a cooperation agreement between Baltic and Polish energy operators to ensure smooth operations and swift system repairs.
