World’s number one tennis player, Iga Swiatek, secured an easy win in the second round of the tournament, defeating Austrian Julia Grabher in straight sets, 6:3, 6:2. Ranked 92nd, Grabher was unable to put up a significant challenge for Swiatek, who only dropped one serve throughout the match.
Iga Świątek, the World No.1, will face Bernarda Pera in the 1/8 final after Pera’s impressive win over Maria Tatjana on Wednesday.
Hurkacz’s rollercoaster
Hubert Hurkacz has had a difficult season, unable to break through in long, three-set matches and falling out of tournaments in the early rounds against lower-ranked opponents.
Yesterday’s match between ‘Hubi’ and their opponent was a rollercoaster of excitement. In the first set, neither player was able to gain an advantage, with the set ending in a tie-break that Hubi lost, 9:11. In the second set, Hubi held their nerve, winning the set 6:4. The third set was the decisive one, with Hubi coming out on top after a number of thrilling rallies, taking the set 7:5 and the match.
Hubert Hurkacz’s next opponent will be Borna Corić.
Both Swiatek and Hurkacz are scheduled to play their matches on Sunday, 30 April.
