Meet Bakcyl: The New Zebra at the Zoo Wroclaw

A new striped resident has joined the Zoo Wroclaw! Born on November 28, Bakcyl, the youngest zebra in the herd, is the offspring of Bera and Koral, the only adult male zebra. His name, chosen by caretakers to match other zebras like Bronia, Bazuka, and Bali, reflects a tradition of names starting with “B.” Curious but cautious, Bakcyl stays close to his mother, especially as Koral fiercely protects him from the attention of other zebras.

Winter Challenges for Zebras and Giraffes

Meet Bakcyl: The New Zebra at the Zoo

During winter, Chapman’s zebras and reticulated giraffes at the zoo spend limited time outdoors. Their time on the Savannah enclosure depends on weather conditions like freezing temperatures or icy grounds. On colder days, animals like Bakcyl may stay in the care facility to ensure their safety. The zoo appreciates visitors’ understanding regarding these seasonal adjustments.

Native to southern Africa, Chapman’s zebra belongs to the horse family and is closely related to the extinct quagga. Habitat loss, poaching, and drought pose significant threats to their survival. While their population numbers might seem stable, these challenges put them at greater risk of extinction than initially apparent.
