German Chancellor Friedrich Merz admitted that he had hoped for a different outcome in Poland’s presidential election. He also stated that “such a result is causing some concern in France as well.” Karol Nawrocki’s campaign chief, Paweł Szefernaker, responded to the German politician’s remarks, saying, “The Chancellor’s comments do not help in building good Polish-German relations,” noted the PiS politician.
Merz was speaking on Friday during the annual “summer press conference,” where the achievements and challenges of the federal government are traditionally discussed.
One journalist pointed out that elections will take place in both Poland and France in 2027.
“There is a risk that politicians who are skeptical of the EU or openly opposed to it may win. How will that affect the future of Europe?” he asked Merz.
“Yes, that is truly one of the greatest challenges facing the EU in terms of its unity. I must admit, I was hoping for a different result in Poland’s presidential election. This outcome is also causing some concern in France,” replied the German Chancellor.
In response, Paweł Szefernaker, head of Karol Nawrocki’s campaign team, made a statement:
“If the German Chancellor says he would have preferred ‘a different result in the Polish presidential election,’ that only proves how good a choice President Nawrocki is for POLAND! The Chancellor’s remarks do not support the development of good Polish-German relations,” emphasized the politician in a post on platform X.
POLAND FIRST. POLES FIRST, he added.
