The 19-year-old broke the junior world record in the repechage of the quarter-finals of the world junior short track championships. The Pole improved his previous best 1500m result by almost three seconds.
Riding in the third group, the Pole finished the 1,500m competition with a time of 2:10.495, thus breaking the junior world record over this distance. And this in a group in which he found himself by finishing last in the quarter-finals!
Michal Niewinski is one of the Poles taking part in the world junior short track championships in Dresden. And even though he is yet to fight for medals, he will already be able to count the competition as a very successful one. And this is thanks to a crazy result in the repechages of the quarter-finals (he finished last in the sixth quarter-final).
Interestingly, as many as three athletes from his group in the repechage finished in a faster time than Kim Si Un, who held the previous world record. The Korean set it six years ago. He ran the 1500 metres in a time of 2:13.199.
In the next part of the competition, Niewinski also took first place in his group and advanced to the semi-finals. He is the only Pole left in the 1500m stakes.
