Morawiecki on Tusk’s remarks about U.S. troops: “What is he talking about? What European solidarity?”

Mateusz Morawiecki commented at a morning press conference on a recent statement by Donald Tusk, who said he did not want to “poach” American troops from Germany. It is worth recalling that over the next 12 months, around 5,000 U.S. soldiers are expected to leave Germany and could potentially be stationed in Poland.

“This issue is not partisan. It is not political. It is epochal – absolutely historic. Strengthening Poland’s security should be a matter entirely above divisions,” Morawiecki explained.

The former prime minister also referred to the activity of President Karol Nawrocki.

“Thanks to the efforts and actions – above all by President Karol Nawrocki – and we clearly remember his visit to the White House in September last year, a real breakthrough has been achieved. We now have the possibility of establishing a permanent base of U.S. troops in Poland. Just imagine how much this would strengthen Poland’s level of security and protection against any potential attacks,” the former prime minister said.

The Law and Justice (PiS) politician stressed that on such a matter there must be no hedging, no over-nuancing, and no “diplomacy of evasion.” He also recalled that the Pentagon had announced the withdrawal of several thousand American troops from Germany, as well as Donald Tusk’s recent comment that one must not “break European solidarity.”

“What is he talking about? What is this about? European solidarity? Does he not understand what international politics is? Does he not know that international politics is, above all, a struggle for one’s own interest? (…) Was that European solidarity when Germany signed an agreement with Russia on Nord Stream 2?” the deputy leader of Law and Justice (PiS) asked rhetorically, referring to the Nord Stream 2.

Morawiecki also addressed an appeal to his successor.

“I appeal from here to the current prime minister, Prime Minister Tusk – he should stop talking nonsense. A week ago he spoke about a Russian threat in a few months; a week later he is talking around the issue, circling it, suggesting there is no need to attract American troops here. People, let’s all hold our heads – he has not grown into this role,” said one of the leaders of Law and Justice (PiS).
