More Mass Layoffs at PKP Cargo. The Company Is Withdrawing from the Market

As reported by money.pl, PKP Cargo plans another round of mass layoffs. These will affect up to 1,041 employees in 2025 and up to 1,388 in 2026. The company’s management announced that the cuts will impact various professional groups.

Laying Off Without Mercy

The planned layoffs are expected to be completed by September 30, 2026, with those scheduled for 2025 to be finalized by the end of July.

On October 31, 2024, PKP Cargo concluded a previous round of mass layoffs, during which 2,515 employment contracts were terminated. This process began in early July 2024. During the same period, another 1,150 employees left the company for reasons unrelated to restructuring. As a result, PKP Cargo reduced its workforce by 3,665 employees in total.

The PKP Cargo Group reported a net loss of 48.6 million PLN in the first quarter of 2025, compared to a loss of 118.1 million PLN a year earlier.

Still in the Red

The company stated that the restructuring measures implemented so far have focused on workforce reduction, terminating some lease agreements, withdrawing from costly contracts, selling off assets that are not cost-effective for transport operations, and adjusting the organizational structure.

In 2024, the PKP Cargo Group recorded a net loss of 2.41 billion PLN. Operating profit before depreciation (EBITDA) amounted to 299.7 million PLN. Operating revenues dropped to 4.52 billion PLN, marking a significant decline compared to 2023, when they stood at 5.55 billion PLN. For comparison, the group’s net profit in 2023 was 82.1 million PLN, with EBITDA at 1.083 billion PLN.
