Nationwide Farmers’ Protest. Błaszczak: “The Government Agrees to EU Ideas”

Today, between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., a nationwide farmers’ protest against the EU-Mercosur agreement is taking place across Poland. “If the government protects the interests of Germany, corporations, and large importers instead of the Polish countryside, it is no surprise that citizens are taking to the streets! Today we stand in solidarity with the farming community,” writes Mariusz Błaszczak, Vice President of Law and Justice (PiS), on social media.

On Tuesday, a nationwide farmers’ protest is being held throughout Poland. The demonstration began at 10:00 a.m. and will last until 3:00 p.m.

As reported by Portal Tygodnik Rolniczy, “the protests are to take the form of tractor and agricultural vehicle stoppages along roads and overpasses, without blocking traffic.” Farmers oppose the EU-Mercosur agreement. Polish farmers are demanding that the Polish Sejm adopt “an unequivocal resolution obliging the Government of the Republic of Poland to firmly oppose the EU-Mercosur agreement.”

Moreover, they warn that an agreement with the Mercosur countries could lead to an influx of cheap food from outside the European Union, produced under lower quality standards. In their assessment, effective mechanisms to protect European producers will be lacking, which could ultimately mean the liquidation of family farms.

Błaszczak: Farmers Have Had Enough

On the occasion of the large-scale action by Polish farmers, PiS Vice President Mariusz Błaszczak writes on platform X: “On December 30, farmers are taking to the roads! Hundreds of tractors and machines across Poland are an expression of desperation and opposition to the policies of the government and the EU.”

The government claims it stands on the side of Polish farms, yet at the same time agrees to the EU-Mercosur agreement, which will open the market to cheap food imports from South America – often produced under conditions worse than EU sanitary, environmental, and animal welfare standards, we read further.

The politician adds: “This is not a policy that supports our farmers – it is a policy that pushes them out of the market! Instead of truly defending Polish agriculture and food security, the government agrees to EU ideas that serve German interests – because that is what the Mercosur agreement is mainly about.”

“Farmers have had enough: over 160 reported protest locations, tractors along a huge number of roads, overpasses, and routes – this is a warning signal that must not be ignored!” continues the post.

Błaszczak concludes: “If the government protects the interests of Germany, corporations, and large importers instead of the Polish countryside, it is no surprise that citizens are taking to the streets! Today we stand in solidarity with the farming community.”
