On February 2, a decree by the President of the Republic of Poland went into effect, according to which, Kraków’s Nowa Huta, the collegiate complex in Opatów, the Orthodox Monastery of St. Onufry in Jableczna and Orthodox Monastery of the Annunciation in Surpasl were recognized as History Monuments.
The Monument of History is a prestigious title that is conferred by the President of the Republic of Poland under the Act of July 23, 2003, on the Protection and Care of Historical Monuments. It is a recognition of the immense cultural importance of an immovable monument and is awarded at the request of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage.
On February 2, 2023, the decree of the President of the Republic of Poland came into force, according to which, four more objects of exceptional historical value were added to the prestigious list. Currently, 123 objects already hold the title of History Monument.
Architectural and urban complex of Nowa Huta district in Krakow
Nowa Huta is a district of Krakow, built as a separate city, according to an individually developed plan, with a clearly defined urban order. Initially intended to be an independent city, ad extremum Nowa Huta was incorporated into the body of Krakow as a district in 1951.
Nowa Huta is renowned as a monument to the past, commemorating the memory and history of an era long gone. Despite the various changes in administration and the inconsistent growth of the city, it has been able to retain its original spatial features. Its unique historical and architectural features make it stand out in the cultural backdrop of Krakow, both in terms of Polish history and in the realm of European city planning.
Collegiate church of Saint Martin in Opatow
The collegiate church is located in the centre of Opatów, on the Collegiate Hill, west of the old town (Town Hill), near the valley of the Opatówka River.
The Collegiate church of Saint Martin in Opatow is one of the most valuable monuments of Romanesque architecture and one of the best-preserved 12th-century basilicas in Poland. It houses valuable examples of works of art from the Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque eras.
Orthodox Monastery of the Annunciation in Surpasl
The monastery complex is situated in the northeast corner of the town by the Supraśl River. At its centre is the Orthodox Church of the Annunciation of the Holy Mother of God, with two buildings for residence, the archimandrite’s palace, the gate-bell tower and the Orthodox Church of St. John the Theologian close by. The area also includes catacombs and a decorative garden to the south.
St. Onufry Orthodox Monastery in Jableczna
The monastery situated two kilometres east of the settlement of Jableczna lies on the Bug River which is the boundary between Poland and Belarus in this area. It consists of an Orthodox church, a monastery north of it, a pilgrim’s house to the west and a gate-bell tower west of the church. This architectural complex has been blended into the high-value nature which surrounds it.
