One Week On, No Leads in “Volhynia Massacre” Monument Vandalism

Nearly a week after the vandalism of the “Volhynia Massacre” monument located in Domostawa, in the Subcarpathian region, there is still no information about the perpetrators. Dariusz Matecki has called for updates on the case. “Will the recording of this act of vandalism be released so that we can help identify the perpetrator or perpetrators?” – asked the Law and Justice (PiS) MP on X.

A red-and-black flag was painted on the base of the monument, created by Andrzej Pityński, along with an inscription in Cyrillic reading “Glory to UPA”. The red-and-black flag was used, among others, by OUN-B/UPA. The vandalism took place on Thursday. Since then, almost a week has passed, and the authorities have gone silent about the progress of the investigation.

MP Dariusz Matecki of Law and Justice (PiS) demanded information regarding the search for those responsible for the vandalism.

“Will the recording of this act of vandalism be released so that we can help identify the perpetrator or perpetrators? A week has passed and there is still no information. If this was a Russian provocation, then it should be stated clearly, and if it was Ukrainians – they should be sent to the front!” – reads the post in which he tagged Jacek Dobrzyński, spokesperson for the coordinator of special services.

Dobrzyński gave a brief reply, assuring of progress: “Calm down. The services can handle it on their own. I will certainly inform you of the results of their work.”

“Well, they’re clearly not handling it if they haven’t been able to catch the thug vandalizing such an important monument for Poles for a week. We want to help,” Matecki retorted.

The “Volhynia Massacre” monument was unveiled in July 2024. The bronze sculpture depicts an eagle whose body is engulfed in flames, with the names of towns whose inhabitants were murdered by UPA inscribed on its wings. In the center of the monument is a cut-out cross, inside which are trident-shaped pitchforks impaling the body of a child. At the base of the monument, on one side, there is a family with children in flames, and on the other – also in flames – the heads of children impaled on fence stakes. The monument, including its pedestal, stands 20 meters tall.
