On the 79th anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising, PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna paid tribute to the energy workers who fought in the defense of the Warsaw Power Plant (Elektrownia Powiśle). The event, titled “Energetycy w Powstaniu” (Energy Workers in the Uprising), featured a premiere animation show titled “Rozkaz: Zdobyć Elektrownię!” (Order: Capture the Power Plant!), created using artificial intelligence.
On Tuesday, August 1, 2023, at 10:30 a.m., representatives from PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna gathered at Skwer Kahla in Powiśle, Warsaw, to pay homage to the energy workers who fought in the Warsaw Uprising.
The commemorative ceremony began with the laying of wreaths at the monument dedicated to the commanders of the Warsaw Power Plant defense, attended by representatives of the government administration, guests, and the PGE Board and its associated companies. Among those present were Małgorzata Gosiewska, Deputy Marshal of the Polish Sejm, Prof. Dr. Hab. Piotr Gliński, Minister of Culture and National Heritage, Karol Rabenda, Undersecretary of State in the Ministry of State Assets, Piotr Pyzik, Undersecretary of State in the Ministry of State Assets, Paweł Sałek, an advisor to President Andrzej Duda, and Krzysztof Sobolewski, Secretary-General of Law and Justice.
“Today, we honor the memory of the heroes of the Warsaw Uprising, but it was not just a Warsaw phenomenon; it was a Polish uprising. On the streets of the capital, soldiers of the Home Army fought for the freedom of all of Poland, not just Warsaw. They were students, workers, officials, and also employees of the Municipal Power Plant. As PGE, the largest energy company in Poland, we are the custodians of the memory of the energy workers who fought in Powiśle. They fought for freedom 79 years ago because they held Poland in their hearts. They paid the highest price for it, but their sacrifice was not in vain. Therefore, for another year in a row, we pay tribute to them, their courage, dedication, and sacrifice. Their memory lives within us, and their spirit shapes the Polish identity for future generations,”
said Wojciech Dąbrowski, the president of the PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna.
During the ceremony, the premiere screening of the film “Rozkaz: Zdobyć Elektrownię!” took place. The 5-minute animation was commissioned by the PGE Foundation and was created using artificial intelligence. The film depicts the events surrounding the capture of the Powiśle Power Plant during the early hours of the Warsaw Uprising.
Additionally, based on the animation’s script, the PGE Foundation prepared a special comic book titled “Rozkaz: Zdobyć Elektrownię!” (Order: Capture the Power Plant!). The illustrations for the comic book were created by Andrzej Grzechnik. The comic is available on the PGE website.
Following the official part of the celebrations, an outdoor “Kino Powstańcze” (Uprising Cinema) took place, where films dedicated to the Warsaw Uprising were screened. Among the films shown were “Rozkaz: Zdobyć Elektrownię!” (Order: Capture the Power Plant!), “Energetycy w Powstaniu: wspomnienia” (Energy Workers in the Uprising: Memories), “Wywiad jakiego jeszcze nie było: pseudonim “Cubryna” (An Interview Like Never Before: Codename “Cubryna”), “Energetycy w Powstaniu” (Energy Workers in the Uprising), “Fajna ferajna czyli powstanie oczyma dzieci” (Cool Gang: The Uprising Through Children’s Eyes) directed by Tomasz Stankiewicz, “Powstanie Warszawskie” (Warsaw Uprising) by Jan Komasa, “Godzina W” (W Hour) by Janusz Morgenstern, and “Kanał” (Canal) directed by Andrzej Wajda.
From July 31 until the end of September, an outdoor exhibition titled “Rozkaz: Zdobyć Elektrownię!” (Order: Capture the Power Plant!) dedicated to the employees of the Powiśle Power Plant is available near the PGE headquarters at ul. Mysia 2 in Warsaw. Additionally, from August 1 for 63 days, a large-format mesh with the inscription “Energetycy w Powstaniu Warszawskim. Pamiętamy.” (Energy Workers in the Warsaw Uprising. We Remember.) is displayed on the façade of the PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna headquarters at ul. Mysia 2 in Warsaw.
