Law and Justice (PiS) has filed a complaint with the Supreme Court (SN) against the State Electoral Commission’s (PKW) decision to reject its 2023 financial report. PiS Treasurer Henryk Kowalczyk described the PKW’s actions as “unlawful” and lacking “substantive grounds.” He emphasized that the party’s financial dealings adhered to legal regulations, with no evidence of illicit funding cited by the PKW.
Potential Financial Repercussions
PKW’s rejection of PiS’s financial report could result in the loss of state subsidies for three years, amounting to millions of złoty. Previously, PKW had also contested PiS’s election campaign financing, reducing the party’s public funding and mandating a refund of disputed amounts. PiS views the PKW’s recent actions as an extension of these challenges and asserts its compliance with financial laws.
The dispute underscores tensions between PKW and the SN’s Extraordinary Control Chamber, with some PKW members questioning the legitimacy of its rulings. Kowalczyk noted that a similar case involving Confederation in 2020 was resolved in the party’s favor by the same chamber, expressing cautious optimism for PiS.
Awaiting Supreme Court Verdict
The Supreme Court will address PiS’s earlier complaint on December 11, and its ruling on the latest case is pending. Kowalczyk remains confident in the party’s legal standing, though he acknowledged the unpredictability of outcomes in Poland’s current political climate.
