“We need to give Karol Nawrocki the arguments and weapons in hand so that he can fight on the international stage to prevent this migration pact from coming into force,” said Elżbieta Witek in an interview with the portal Niezalezna.pl about the planned referendum.
In Warsaw’s Castle Square on Saturday, thousands of people gathered for a demonstration to express their opposition, among other things, to the relocation of illegal immigrants to Poland under the EU migration pact.
During the demonstration, Niezalezna.pl asked Elżbieta Witek about the referendum that accompanied the 2023 elections. Its result was not binding, as fewer than half of the eligible voters took part. “A successful referendum gives the government a powerful weapon,” emphasized the MP.
Speaking from the perspective of the Lower Silesia region, she described the situation observable on Poland’s western border. “The problem of illegal migration does not concern only the eastern border, but also the western one. The Germans are transferring illegal migrants to us, and more and more of them are walking around our towns and cities. People are afraid,” stressed the PiS MP.
Details of the Referendum
For some time, the Law and Justice (PiS) political camp has been preparing to hold another referendum on illegal migration. MP Witek told Niezalezna.pl that a significant number of signatures have already been collected. “But we want to gather even more,” she added.
When asked for details, she said that the referendum question has not yet been finalized. She emphasized that work on the process is accelerating, signaling that Poles want a referendum is important for President Karol Nawrocki in international debates. “We need to give him arguments and weapons in hand so that he can fight on the international stage to prevent this migration pact from coming into force,” Witek explained.
The MP also recalled the coercion of local governments and the consequences faced by those who opposed establishing centers for foreigners. “The blackmail that municipalities will not receive funds if they do not withdraw the resolutions they adopted on this issue shows that this government cannot be trusted in the slightest,” she emphasized.
