    Plans for Nuclear Power Plant Construction in Poland – PEJ Seeks Environmental Approval for Lubiatowo-Kopalino Site

    In Poland, there are plans to build nuclear power plants, and the company Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe (PEJ) is the investor and future operator. Currently, work is underway to obtain an environmental decision for one of the 27 potential nuclear power plant locations in Poland – Lubiatowo-Kopalino on the Baltic Sea coast. In March 2022, PEJ applied for an environmental decision for three AP-1000 reactors from Westinghouse at this location and expects to obtain it in 2023.

    Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe (PEJ) is a company implementing tasks aimed at ensuring energy security of Poland. Responsibilities of the Company include:

    -Preparing the investment process and acting as the investor in the construction project of the first -nuclear power plant in Poland. The Company will also be responsible for the construction of other nuclear reactors with a total capacity of between 6 and 9 GWe, based on proven, large-scale, generation III (+) pressurised water reactors, as well as their potential operation;
    -Providing support for the government administration in the implementation of the Polish Nuclear Power Programme.
    -Building public support for the development of nuclear energy.

    Earlier, in 2010, the Ministry of Economy formulated a list of 28 potential nuclear power plant locations. From this list, after detailed location studies, 27 locations were selected, including Żarnowiec, where an unfinished nuclear power plant was built in the 1980s, Warta-Klempicz as the site for the second power plant, and eight reserve locations from the 1980s. As part of the Polish Nuclear Energy Program, Energoprojekt-Warszawa commissioned an assessment of these locations. The subsequent Environmental Impact Forecast of the Polish Nuclear Energy Program indicated four recommended locations: Żarnowiec, Kopań near Darłowo, Klempicz, and Nowe Miasto near Płońsk. Lubiatowo-Kopalino and Choczewo on the Baltic Sea coast were designated as reserve locations.

    Ultimately, PEJ focused its work on Lubiatowo-Kopalino, where work is currently underway to obtain an environmental decision.
