Poland, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland have announced a joint position on strengthening cooperation in defence financing and joint military procurement. The four countries also pledged to accelerate work on a new Multilateral Defence Mechanism (MDM), which is expected to become operational by 2027.
Joint Declaration by Four Countries
The Ministry of Finance published a joint statement by Poland, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland, in which the signatories reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening cooperation in the fields of security and defence.
“The United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Finland, and Poland reaffirm their shared commitment to strengthening defence sector financing, improving the efficiency of defence spending, and transforming our collective defence capabilities,” the document states.
The statement also emphasizes that the changing international security environment and Russia’s ongoing aggression against Ukraine require coordinated action by allies.
“In the face of the rapidly evolving international security environment and the consequences of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, we will work together to counter emerging threats. We remain committed to supporting Ukraine in defending its sovereignty and resisting Russian aggression,” the joint declaration reads.
The four countries also announced progress on the Multilateral Defence Mechanism (MDM). The initiative is intended to facilitate the financing of military investments, support joint procurement, and improve coordination of acquisitions of key defence capabilities among allied nations.
According to the declaration, the participating countries intend to begin formal treaty negotiations in the near future, while respecting the ratification procedures applicable in each country. The goal is to launch the mechanism by 2027.
The signatories also announced plans to cooperate with additional partners interested in joining the initiative. The next phase of the project’s development is scheduled for the autumn. The declaration further stresses that the new arrangements are intended to remain fully consistent with NATO’s activities while enhancing the defence capabilities and interoperability of allied nations.
