Poland Discovers Oil, Germany Speaks of “Backwardness” and “Lebensraum”

The discovery of a massive oil and gas deposit off the Polish coast of the Baltic Sea has triggered a strong reaction in Germany. Instead of congratulations, there are accusations of “backwardness” and concerns about the “German Lebensraum.” This is yet another example of a situation where Berlin, rather than cooperating, chooses to block Polish interests, just as it did in matters involving navigation on the Oder River or the construction of the port in Świnoujście.

Wolin East May Change Poland’s Position

The Canadian company Central European Petroleum (CEP) has announced the discovery of the largest conventional hydrocarbon deposit in Poland’s history. Located in the Polish sector of the Baltic Sea, the find contains 33 million tons of oil and 27 billion cubic meters of gas.

“It can be said confidently that this is the largest oil deposit discovered on Polish territory at least since World War II,” said the Chief National Geologist, Krzysztof Galos.

The resources could meet up to 5% of national demand for several years, significantly strengthening Poland’s energy security.

Berlin Is Unhappy About Poland’s Success

Instead of offering support, Germany is raising alarm. Till Backhaus, the Environment Minister of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, has criticized the Polish success.

“Our future does not lie in Baltic Sea oil, but in energy from the sun, wind, and biomass,” he said in an interview with Bild.

According to him, what Poles consider a success and a developmental opportunity, or at least a guarantee of greater energy security, is, in fact, a step backward.

“The project represents a backward industrial policy in terms of climate policy, which runs counter to environmental and tourism interests on the German side,” he added.

Environmental Rhetoric in the Service of Berlin’s Interests

Following the announcement of the Polish discovery, German local officials also joined in its criticism. Laura Isabelle Marisken, the mayor of Heringsdorf, spoke of threats to nature.

“Industrial exploitation of gas and oil right on our doorstep would be a major intrusion into our homeland,” she said.

In response to the project, voices from German environmental organizations have also emerged, i.e. groups that often represent Berlin’s interests under the guise of environmental protection. One such statement was presented on the website of the German broadcaster rbb24. The message was clear:

“Poles must not be allowed to exploit the deposits near Wolin – such actions would violate the German Lebensraum…”

Poland Invests, Germany Protests – A Pattern Known for Years

The opposition to Poland’s energy success fits into a broader pattern of actions by German authorities: from attempts to block inland navigation on the Oder, to resistance against the expansion of the container port in Świnoujście. Now, as Poland is on the verge of significantly increasing its resource independence, German resistance emerges once again. The goal is clear: to maintain its own energy and geopolitical dominance.
