“Poland holds the presidency of the European Union, yet all the key meetings and decisions are made outside of Warsaw,”wrote Rafał Bochenek, spokesperson for the opposition party PiS, on Twitter. His comment referred to a situation reported by the French press today. According to Le Figaro, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will be joined by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron in peace talks with Donald Trump in Washington.
This information emerged from a statement by French government spokesperson Sophie Primas, who, following a Cabinet meeting around noon, announced that a trip to Washington was being considered. The potential delegation would include Emmanuel Macron, Volodymyr Zelensky, and Keir Starmer for peace negotiations. However, she did not provide a specific date, only mentioning that it was expected to take place “in the near future.”
An hour later, the Élysée Palace clarified that Emmanuel Macron would not be leaving France in the coming days.
Regardless, it is evident that peace negotiations concerning Ukraine are currently being led in Washington, London, and Paris. Meanwhile, Berlin remains informed, as Zelensky called German Chancellor Olaf Scholz around midday to brief him on the situation. “Where is the Polish government in all of this?” Bochenek questioned on Twitter, highlighting how once again, major diplomatic efforts were being conducted over the heads of Polish politicians.
“Where is the Polish government, which should be securing safety guarantees for our country? Once again, are we being sidelined? Once again, outplayed? Poland holds the EU presidency, yet all the major meetings and decisions are happening outside of Warsaw! This is a scandal and a disgrace for Tusk and his entire team,” the PiS spokesperson declared.
