    Poles remember saint John Paul II, the pope and a great Polish patriot. The Archbishop of Krakow, Cardinal Karol Wojtyła, was the first cardinal from Poland, as well as the first cardinal from outside Italy for 455 years, to sit on the throne of Peter. He took the papal name John Paul II.
