On July 6, 2024, the Airborne Museum at Hartenstein in Oosterbeek inaugurated an exhibition dedicated to the 1st Independent Parachute Brigade and its legendary commander, General Stanisław Sosabowski.
The exhibition, titled “Polish Paratroopers in Operation Market Garden,” was organized by the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in The Hague in collaboration with the Pilecki Institute. Notable attendees included Patricia Hoytink-Roubos, Mayor of Overbetuwe, and Agnes Schaap, Mayor of Renkum, along with representatives from the diplomatic corps and military officials from the UK, Germany, and the Netherlands. The exhibition will be open to the public until the end of September 2024.
A Call for Recognition and Justice
The exhibition’s opening coincided with an open letter from the mayors of Arnhem, Renkum, Ede, and Overbetuwe to the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, advocating for the rehabilitation of the soldiers of the 1st Independent Parachute Brigade and General Sosabowski. This gesture underscores the enduring respect and gratitude for the Polish paratroopers’ bravery and sacrifice during Operation Market Garden, marking a significant moment in commemorating their historical contributions.
