President Blocks Judicial Appointments. Confederation MP Urges Ruling Camp to Reflect

“I hope the current ruling camp will reach a point of genuine reflection, because I believe Poles should not have to wait any longer. If the president is once again drawing attention to numerous irregularities and doubts, then it seems to me there is no more important figure in the state whose voice should be heard on this matter,” said Grzegorz Płaczek, chair of the Confederation’s parliamentary caucus, in an interview with Niezależna.pl, commenting on the president’s decision not to sign the appointments of 46 judges.

President Karol Nawrocki decided not to sign the appointments of 46 judges whom he believes violated the constitutional and legal order of the Republic of Poland. He also announced that he would “not grant promotions (…) to those judges who listen to the misguided whispers of Justice Minister Waldemar Żurek.”

Confederation: A Constitutional Reset Is Necessary

MP Grzegorz Płaczek noted in his interview with Niezależna.pl that the president’s decision “is unfortunately the result of the still unresolved problem concerning how the courts in Poland function.” He added: “The president made a decision that, in his view, best protects the interests and security of our state.”

He stressed that “as long as we do not resolve these issues in the Polish parliament, this situation will likely persist.” He added, “We will continue to see many decisions that the opposing side will criticize.”

“We, as the Confederation, have long encouraged the creation of a so-called constitutional reset so that we could jointly consider how to resolve all these doubts and problems. So that we could bury the hatchet and start functioning normally in this country,”

Płaczek said.

He was also asked whether, in his view, the president’s decision to refuse appointments to politically entangled judges could encourage judicial circles involved in the dispute over the justice system to reflect and engage in talks regarding the constitutional reset proposed by the Confederation.

“I hope the current ruling camp will reach a point of genuine reflection, because I believe Poles should not have to wait any longer. If the president is once again drawing attention to numerous irregularities and doubts, then it seems to me there is no more important figure in the state whose voice should be heard on this matter,”

 Płaczek concluded.
