On September 17, 1939, the Red Army, in violation of the non-aggression pact, invaded Polish territory, completing the fourth partition of our homeland in agreement with Nazi Germany. The Soviet attack marked the beginning of the tragic fate of hundreds of thousands of Poles – deportations, murders, gulags, and Katyń. The Monument to the Fallen and Murdered in the East in Warsaw is one of the most important sites commemorating the victims of Soviet terror. Each year on September 17, state and patriotic ceremonies are held there.
