The President of Poland, Karol Nawrocki, met in Budapest with the Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orbán. Both countries are celebrating the Polish-Hungarian Friendship Day on Monday. Nawrocki also met with the President of Hungary, Tamás Sulyok.
Nawrocki traveled to Hungary on a working visit, his office announced. Earlier on Monday, the president took part in the official celebrations of Polish-Hungarian Friendship Day in Przemyśl, where he met with the Hungarian President Tamás Sulyok. In the afternoon, the Polish president was welcomed in Budapest by his Hungarian counterpart. The leaders held a private meeting at the Sándor Palace, the Hungarian presidential residence.
During the visit, Nawrocki laid a wreath at the monument of General Józef Bem, a national hero of both Poland and Hungary.
The Polish president also met in Budapest with the Hungarian prime minister. The Chancellery of the President of Poland shared a photo from the meeting on X. “Poles and Hungarians, two good friends. Welcome to Budapest, President Nawrocki,” Orbán wrote on X, posting a photograph with the Polish head of state.
The central bridge in Budapest, the Chain Bridge, was illuminated on Monday in the national colors of both countries. Celebrations of Polish-Hungarian Friendship Day are organized alternately in Poland and Hungary. Last year, they were held in the Hungarian city of Kaposvár, and in 2024, the presidents of Poland and Hungary met in Stary Sącz.
The declaration establishing March 23 as the Day of Friendship between the two nations was adopted on March 12, 2007, following a decision by the Hungarian parliament. A few days later, a similar resolution was passed by the Sejm of the Republic of Poland.
