Presidential Debate: First Details Emerge

News about a joint presidential debate organized by Poland’s three largest television stations surfaced on Thursday during a news program aired by TVP.

“Telewizja Polska, Polsat, and TVN will organize a joint debate, to which candidates who have collected the required minimum of 100,000 signatures are being invited,” it was announced, with the addition that “TVP is awaiting confirmation of attendance from campaign teams.” According to the report, the debate is planned to take place on Monday, May 12, at 8:00 p.m.

The Polish Press Agency (PAP) reached out to TVN, TVP, and Polsat for confirmation. TVN and Polsat confirmed the news, while Telewizja Polska responded that the stations are still in the consultation phase. “At this time, we cannot confirm this date,” TVP’s press office stated.

Under Article 120 of the Electoral Code, Telewizja Polska is legally obligated to conduct debates between presidential candidates. Regulations issued by the National Broadcasting Council specify that TVP must organize at least one debate in the final two weeks before the election. Additionally, all candidates must be guaranteed equal participation conditions.

The first round of the presidential election is scheduled for May 18, with a potential runoff set for June 1.
