Prime Minister Considers “Coup d’État” Remarks Resolved as President Schedules Talks with Speaker Hołownia

President Andrzej Duda announced on Wednesday that next week, before the swearing-in of his successor, Karol Nawrocki, he will meet with the Speaker of the Sejm, Szymon Hołownia. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Donald Tusk commented on Hołownia’s remarks regarding a “coup d’état” by saying: “The matter is closed.”

Last Friday, Hołownia said on Polsat News that he had been repeatedly urged to delay the swearing-in of Karol Nawrocki as President of the Republic of Poland, which he said would have constituted a “coup d’état.” When asked who had made such proposals, he referred to individuals who “did not like the outcome of the presidential election.” On Monday, the spokesperson for the Warsaw District Prosecutor’s Office, Prosecutor Piotr Antoni Skiba, told the media that in the coming days or weeks, Hołownia will be questioned as a witness in connection with his statements. The request to the prosecutor’s office was submitted by attorney Bartosz Lewandowski.

President Duda stated on television yesterday that he will speak with Speaker Hołownia next week. “We have an appointment,” he said.

He clarified that the meeting had been arranged before Hołownia made his statement about a “coup d’état.”

“However, after the Speaker’s remarks, which sparked such a storm, I reached out to him again, confirming that this conversation is indeed very necessary under the current circumstances,”

Duda said.

“There has been public speculation that he has been approached in the Sejm by various politicians and so-called experts trying to convince him to find some way to prevent the inauguration of the newly elected president,”

the outgoing president added.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk commented on Hołownia’s statement about the “coup d’état” by saying: “The matter is closed.”

“Sometimes people, even the most serious ones, say things that are not fully thought through, but Speaker Hołownia tried to publicly clarify what was probably a misunderstanding, one that was costly for him, but as far as I’m concerned, the matter is closed,”

the head of government said in an interview with TVN24 on Tuesday.
