Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder will not be subject to European Union sanctions. The proposal to include him was submitted in the European Parliament by Jacek Ozdoba, a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) from Poland’s Law and Justice party (PiS), but it did not receive enough support. “An absolute scandal. The political group, including Biedroń, Śmiszek, and Scheuring-Wielgus, blocked this amendment,” the politician emphasized.
Sanctions Against Schröder? A Proposal from a PiS MEP
PiS MEP Jacek Ozdoba proposed an amendment to the European Parliament’s resolution titled “A united response to recent violations by Russia of the airspace and critical infrastructure of EU member states.” The amendment called on theEuropean Commissionto impose sanctions on former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder.
“We propose adding a statement that the European Parliament calls on the European Commission and the Council to take action aimed at holding accountable those responsible for the so-called reset in relations between the European Union and the Russian Federation, as well as for promoting and implementing economic projects that contributed to Europe’s increased energy dependence on Russia, and consequently, to the current security crisis and the war against Ukraine,” said the PiS politician.
Ozdoba added that the amendment called for Schröder to be “subject to EU sanctions, with his case serving as a symbolic example of the Union’s rejection of attitudes contrary to its values and interests.”
However, the amendment did not receive sufficient support from MEPs.
“An Absolute Scandal”
“An absolute scandal. The political group, including Biedroń, Śmiszek, and Scheuring-Wielgus, blocked the amendment to the resolution that would have sanctioned Gerhard Schröder and held accountable the politicians responsible for the reset with Russia. I already know who blocked the amendment. Watch this video – the woman standing up, who decides on behalf of our leftist ‘Polish’ MEPs, is their group leader!” Ozdoba pointed out.
He emphasized that “this must have consequences — the festival of hypocrisy continues!”
“So who exactly is in the pro-Russian camp?” he asked.
Schröder — Putin’s Friend
It is worth recalling that Gerhard Schröder has been friends with Russian President Vladimir Putin since his time as German Chancellor (1998–2005). After Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Schröder was heavily criticized for his pro-Putin policies, his employment with Russian state-owned companies, and his lobbying on behalf of Russia, particularly regarding the construction of the Nord Stream 2 Baltic gas pipeline.
For years, Schröder served on the boards of Russian state corporations, including Nord Stream AG (affiliated with Gazprom) and Rosneft. He resigned from these positions only in May 2022.
