Radosław Sikorski clearly cannot come to terms with President Karol Nawrocki’s refusal to agree to saddling future generations with European debt for armaments under the SAFE program. “I will propose placing a plaque on every rifle, tank, artillery piece, drone and anti-drone system reading: ‘Dear soldier of the Polish Armed Forces, this is something Karol Nawrocki did not want to give you,’” Sikorski announced on X. However, the foreign minister may not have fully considered the reactions his idea would provoke.
The government side cannot forgive President Karol Nawrocki and the president of the National Bank of Poland, Prof. Adam Glapiński, for refusing to obediently agree to the SAFE defense loan promoted by the European Union—considered extremely unfavorable for Poland—and instead developing and proposing their own method of financing armaments in the form of the “SEJF 0%” program.
Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski vented his frustration in an emotional post on the social media platform X.
“If the President vetoes SAFE and we implement it anyway through the Armed Forces Support Fund, I will propose that every rifle, tank, artillery piece, drone and anti-drone system carry a plaque saying: ‘Dear soldier of the Polish Armed Forces, this is something Karol Nawrocki did not want to give you,’” Sikorski wrote.
And with that, he unleashed a storm of mocking comments.
“Go ahead and stick WOŚP heart stickers on them,” joked Confederation MP Witold Tumanowicz.
“Such statements are simply destructive to the army’s morale. The debate is not about whether to buy equipment, but how to pay for it and where the money should come from. Instead of a substantive discussion, the deputy prime minister is threatening to incite soldiers against the Commander-in-Chief,” protested Jerzy Kwaśniewski, head of the Ordo Iuris institute.
Michał Cichy from Confederation also did not hide his disgust, writing about “crossing the boundaries of embarrassment.”
Many readers considered Sikorski’s post childish and harmful.
