“We do not want our system to be abused. We are also at a different stage of the war today than at its beginning” – said Mateusz Morawiecki, commenting on President Nawrocki’s veto of the bill concerning aid for Ukrainians. He added that thanks to such a move, the 2026 budget “will even be able to be constructed at all.”
President Karol Nawrocki vetoed the bill concerning aid for Ukrainians. The head of state does not agree with provisions that would extend, among others, the 800 Plus benefit for unemployed citizens of our eastern neighbor. The Presidential Office informed that the president’s proposals have already been submitted to the Sejm for consideration.
Rationalizing the budget
Former Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki commented on the presidential veto. Referring to the changes in 800+ payments proposed by Nawrocki, he considered that “the idea is correct.”
“It is very good that President Nawrocki reminded us here – having such views himself, views that are rationalizing in relation to the budget. They increase the chances that this budget will even be able to be constructed at all” – said Morawiecki.
The former head of government emphasized that the estimated costs of the program for unemployed Ukrainians “may amount to one to two billion zlotys.” However, he assumed exceptions to this rule – for single mothers with a disabled child, whose husbands are fighting on the front. He added that now is “the time to revolutionize the system when it comes to people coming from Ukraine.”
“We do not want our system to be abused. We are also at a different stage of the war today than at its beginning” – he reminded. He stressed that what is needed is “strict registration of people coming from Ukraine.”
