    Record-breaking temperature on 1st January in Poland

    No one expected such a warm first day of the New Year. At 11:30 a.m., the meteorological station in Warsaw indicated 18.9 degrees Celsius, which is a new temperature record for January. The previous one, set on 6 January 1999 in the Lower Silesian town of Pszenno, was 18.6 degrees Celsius.

    The record from 1999 has already been broken at 3:20 a.m. in Głuchołazy (Opolskie Voivodeship). A temperature of 18.7 degrees Celsius was recorded at the measuring point there.

    It was even warmer in Warsaw at 11.30 am, where the meteorological station indicated 18.9 degrees Celsius. The Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW) reported that this temperature persisted for several tens of minutes.

    At the same time, it was emphasised that heat records for the entire winter period were set in many cities.

    “On the 1st day of the year, a heat record for January 1999 was set and, in many cities, heat records were set for the whole winter period. In Warsaw, the highest temperature was 18.9°C and held for several tens of minutes in the middle of winter,”

    the IMGW reported. 

    There was also the record-warm New Year’s Eve night. In Słubice, it was almost 17 degrees at midnight.
