Remarkable turnout in Hungary’s elections. Latest figures released

By 5:00 PM, voter turnout in Hungary’s elections had reached 74.23 percent. This is an extraordinary result, considering that voting continues until 7:00 PM.

The number of registered voters stands at 7,527,074. This year also saw a record number of people registering to vote at foreign polling stations – more than 90,000. The number of postal voters likewise set a new record, reaching nearly 224,000.

On Sunday, Hungarians are electing 199 members of the National Assembly (Országgyűlés), the country’s unicameral parliament. Of these, 106 are elected in single-member constituencies, while the remaining 93 are chosen from national party lists. In each constituency, the candidate who receives the most votes wins, even if they do not secure an absolute majority.

Every eligible Hungarian citizen voting domestically is entitled to cast two votes: one for a candidate in a single-member constituency, and another for a party list – or a nationality list in the case of voters belonging to one of Hungary’s officially registered minorities. Voters residing abroad cast one vote only, for a national list.

Among those who have already cast their ballots are Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, Tisza leader Péter Magyar, and President Tamás Sulyok. Turnout is highly impressive – by 5:00 PM, 74.23 percent of eligible voters had participated.
