Rising Diabetes Cases in Poland: A Growing Health Challenge

Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

The Ministry of Health reports a notable increase in diabetes cases in Poland, with 3.1 million individuals utilizing public health services in 2022, up from 2.7 million in 2017. The steady growth pattern suggests an estimated 4.2 million people may be affected by 2030, emphasizing the urgency of addressing this non-communicable epidemic.

Diabetes, labeled a 21st-century non-infectious epidemic, affects various age groups and develops slowly. Despite its prevalence, a significant number of individuals remain unaware of their condition.

Types of Diabetes

The majority of cases (99%) fall under Type 2 diabetes, prevalent in middle-aged and older individuals. Type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune disease, requires daily insulin injections. The Ministry highlights the need for early diagnosis and lifestyle interventions.

Internationally, the International Diabetes Federation reported 537 million adults (1 in 10) with diabetes in 2021, projected to rise to 643 million by 2030 and 783 million by 2045. Over half of diabetes cases globally remain undiagnosed.

Symptoms and Risk Factors

Recognizing symptoms such as increased thirst, frequent urination, and weight loss is crucial. The Ministry stresses the importance of regular check-ups, especially for individuals at risk, including those with family history, obesity, hypertension, or polycystic ovary syndrome.

Promoting Healthy Lifestyles

The Ministry advocates for preventative measures, emphasizing proper nutrition, physical activity, and a healthy lifestyle. Initiatives like the National Centre for Nutritional Education provide resources, consultations, and educational materials.

Sugar Tax and Funding Healthcare

To address diabetes and promote healthier choices, a sugar tax was introduced in 2021. The generated funds, amounting to over 1.5 billion PLN, primarily support the National Health Fund and governmental health initiatives.
